How to choose the right book for your child’s age

Standing in front of a shelf of books, trying to work out which one fits a particular child, can feel like a bit of a guessing game. The good news is there is no single right answer, and a few simple cues make it much easier than it looks. Once you know roughly what to expect at each stage, choosing becomes far less daunting and a lot more fun.

Match the book to the stage, not just the age

The ages printed on the back of a book are a rough guide, not a rule. A two year old loves chunky board books they can grab, chew and turn, while a three or four year old enjoys picture books with a bit of story and a nice rhythm to them. Around five and six, many children are ready for early readers with short sentences and plenty of pictures to lean on when a word gets tricky.

From there, chapter books open up, then thicker novels for the ones who want to disappear into a world for hours on end. But children move at their own pace, and a child who is reading well above or below their age is perfectly normal. Trust what your child actually enjoys over what a label says they should be reading.

Watch for the signs

If a book holds their attention and they ask for it again the next night, you have chosen well. If they wriggle off your lap halfway through, it might be too long, too wordy, or simply not their thing just yet. Neither is a failure. It is just useful information for next time, and it costs you nothing to try something different.

A book that is slightly too easy is far better than one that is too hard. Confidence comes from finishing a book and feeling proud, not from struggling through every page. So when in doubt, aim a touch lower and let your child feel clever and capable. That good feeling is what keeps them coming back for more.

Let them have a say

Children pick up books for all sorts of reasons, a dinosaur on the cover, a favourite colour, a character they already know from the telly. That little spark of interest matters more than any reading level. When a child chooses a book for themselves, they are far more likely to actually sit down and read it, and to stick with it when a page gets hard.

So take them browsing and let them point at whatever catches their eye. You can always read the trickier ones together and save the easy ones for solo reading.

Choosing the right book is really about paying attention and staying relaxed about the whole thing. Have a browse through our books, let your child lead, and remember every book here is gently priced with the proceeds going to charity. Happy reading.
